The story follows Viktor Van Dort who, whilst engaged to the Victoria Everglot, accidentally marries a corpse called Emily when practising his vows in the forest. He is dragged into the Land of the Dead where he finds that they inhabit a much livelier world than the Land of the Living, and that Emily may not be so bad after all. He attempts to escape back to the Land of the Living, but does he really want to in the end?
